Team UnLimbited Arm VERSION 2 Alfie Edition.

This is a fully parametric assistive arm desig. It is designed so the parts can be generated to match a recipient’s measurements, printed, assembled, and thermo-formed into a usable device.

WHAT YOU NEED

To size a Version 2 device correctly, you need three measurements.

A: Upper arm circumference

Measure around the middle of the affected upper arm.

B: Forearm length

Measure from the inside fold of the elbow to the wrist on the non-affected arm.

C: Hand length

Measure from the wrist to the tip of the longest finger on the non-affected hand.

IMPORTANT NOTES

A must be taken from the affected arm.

B and C are taken from the non-affected arm.

Minimum hand length is 135 mm.

Minimum bicep circumference is 110 mm.

Minimum cuff length is 65 mm.

HOW SIZING WORKS

Version 2 uses those real-world measurements to scale the printable arm parts.

The main settings are:

Left or Right: choose the arm the device is for

Hand Length: wrist joint to fingertip

Forearm Length: wrist joint to elbow crease

Bicep Circumference: circumference of the upper arm

There are also two technical settings:

Cuff Length: usually leave at the default unless you have a specific reason to change it

Pin Hole Diameter: the metric bolt size used for the tensioner pins, typically M3, M4, or M5

RECOMMENDED PRINT SETTINGS

Printer: any suitable FDM printer

Material: PLA

Layer height: 0.2 mm

Infill: 35% honeycomb

Rafts: none

Supports: yes, but only for specific parts

Perimeters: 3 shells

Top layers: 3

Bottom layers: 3

SUPPORT GUIDANCE

The Palm area needs support.

The Cuff needs support.

None of the other parts require support.

For the Palm, Team UnLimbited typically adds 2 to 3 rows of support in the middle of the palm area to help with bridging.

For the Cuff, use auto-generated support.

All parts are printed in PLA to allow for easier thermo-forming after printing.

TYPICAL WORKFLOW

1. Measure the recipient

2. Enter the measurements into the generator

3. Generate the required parts

4. Print the parts

5. Assemble the device

6. Thermo-form and fit as needed

ASSEMBLY

Assembly for the Version 2 Alfie Edition follows the same general process as the earlier Isabella Edition and uses thermo-forming as part of the build and fitting process.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

The UnLimbited Arm v2.1 is the successor to the earlier Isabella Edition and was named the Alfie Edition after its first recipient.

Key design aims:

Fully parametric sizing

Simplified workflow

Generation of all required parts from recipient measurements

Support for a wide range of recipient sizes, limited mainly by printer build volume
